Throughout the 10 Week Wellness Challenge we have emphasized the importance of setting goals. Setting goals gives you a sense of measurement as you progress and an achievement to work towards. Goal setting is used by high achievers in all fields and can work for you and your wellness goals just the same. As we are approaching the end of the 10 Week Wellness Challenge, it is time to evaluate your progress and set personal long term goals for the next 10 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, year or even longer!
Just as you set your S.M.A.R.T. goals at the beginning of this challenge in January, you can use the same strategy to set your long term goals – with just a little extra planning. Begin by thinking of the big picture. What is your biggest wellness dream? To run a marathon? To fit into those old jeans again? To get off medications? Write down your big picture goal and begin to break it down into smaller milestones. For example, if you set your big picture goal for one year, set a milestone to achieve every three months to continue progressing and stay on track. State each goal as a positive statement so as not to be discouraged and be sure that each milestone is attainable in the time frame allotted to achieve it. Write out your S.M.A.R.T. goal for your long term goal, as well as for each milestone. Be precise and post your goals somewhere you will see them every day – such as the bathroom mirror, at your desk at work or on your refrigerator.
Share your goals with friends and family and recruit them to become or continue to be a part of your support system. You will have motivation through strength in numbers and you may even encourage those close to you to make healthier changes in their own lifestyle.
Throughout this challenge you have committed to living a healthier lifestyle and you have done a great job so far. Don’t let week 10 be the end – take what you have learned and run with it to achieve your big picture goals! I promise, you won’t regret it!
