Welcome to week one of The Next Step Challenge! The Next Step is one of five challenges Live Healthy Iowa offers each year and encourages teams of 2-10 friends, family or co-workers to increase the number of steps they take each day and track their progress on their personal Live Healthy Iowa dashboard. Participants have the chance to win new shoes, Subway gift cards, tickets to an Iowa State football game and more as they improve wellness and reach fitness goals. This challenge will motivate you to be more active which will have both immediate and long term benefits for your health. Physical activity gives people more energy, boosts mood, controls weight, decreases your risk of cardiovascular disease and much more! Congratulations on taking ‘The Next Step’ toward a healthy lifestyle and improved wellness. If you have not yet registered for The Next Step Challenge, there’s still time! As a challenge participant, you have access to many great features on Live Healthy Iowa’s website, including healthy recipes, workouts, fitness plans, the event calendar and health news. You can track your steps, goals and keep a nutrition journal.
Log in to your dashboard by visiting www.livehealthyiowa.org. Once you’re logged in, you are on your ‘Dashboard’ and will see multiple tabs and buttons you can navigate through. This page gives a quick overview of your and your team’s current statistics and shows badges you have earned by completing goals and visiting various areas of the website throughout the challenge. By clicking ‘view messages’ you can message your teammates individually or all at once and by clicking ‘edit profile’ you can update your personal information and change your password. Here you may also view the Leaderboard by clicking the blue button on the right that says “LEADERBOARD”.
In the ‘myProgress’ tab, you are able to track your steps. As a team member, you can track your steps as often as you would like. You can click on the days throughout the week to track for the appropriate day and you may click on previous weeks in the challenge to record for those as well. Participants can record up to two weeks prior throughout the challenge. For example, in week 5 you are still able to record for weeks 3 and 4, however the recording period for week 1 or 2 will be closed. By clicking the blue text at the top that says “View Activity and Steps Per Minute Equivalent” you can convert various fitness activities, such as bicycling, dancing or volleyball, to steps.
On the top right of the page, you will see a toolbar with great resources to guide you throughout the challenge. Hold your cursor over “Resources” and a drop down menu will appear that will allow you to navigate to the “Recipes” page. On this page you can search for various dishes either by selecting a category or searching for recipes. You may set your zip code and favorite store, which will then identify which food items in recipes are on sale. When reading a recipe, you may also add food items to your shopping list.
In the Resources drop down menu, you will also be able to navigate to the “Fitness” page. Here you will see numerous fitness plans and workouts and can search by selecting a category.
