Each Friday you will receive an email with the upcoming week’s lesson, a healthy recipe and your family’s weekly challenge. Be sure your team captain logs onto their Live Healthy Iowa Dashboard to track your family’s completion of that week’s lesson; each family that completes all 6 weeks will WIN a Subway gift card!
Week 1 is an overview of nutrition and physical activity guidelines and recommendations. Each person in your family may have different recommendations and it is important to be sure everyone is getting enough servings of each food group throughout the day and are physically active.
A great way to encourage kids to eat healthy foods, is to include them in preparing your family’s dinner and allow them to prepare their own snacks. Basic cooking skills can teach kids about math, science, portion size, time management and following directions. To be successful, keep it simple! Begin with helping your child prepare a food he or she likes. Stress the importance of washing their hands before and after they prepare food, as well as which kitchen utensils and appliances to stay away from or ask for help with.
Physical activity is important for strength, to reduce the risk of obesity and heart disease, boost mood and have fun! Sports and backyard games are a great opportunity for the whole family to get moving, develop fine and gross motor skills, learn to follow rules, learn to work as a team and bond with one another. It is important for adults to be a positive role model and encourage youth to participate in fun physical activity and make it a part of your family’s daily routine.
