Healthy Families Challenge – Fall Family Fun

Don’t cry because summer is over, smile because it happened! Lucky for us in Iowa, we get to experience all four wonderful seasons and with each comes fun adventures and tasty produce. The fall season offers the opportunity for many cool weather activities to get your heart pumping and delicious, warm, “feel good” meals to satisfy your taste buds.

applesOne of my favorite fall activities is to visit the pumpkin patch to pick pumpkins and apples! Many pumpkin patches have tons of fun activities for the kids and the whole family – tractor races, corn maze, hay rack rides – just to name a few. Apple picking is a great activity for the kids to experience their food coming straight from the earth. Kids take great pride in their own work and teaching them that eating fresh, whole fruit is healthy for us may be easier when they pick the fruit themselves. You can continue to remind them about this fun experience throughout the year to encourage them to eat their fruits and vegetables!

After picking apples, you can continue the fun at home by cooking as a family using your fresh apples as the main ingredient. You can make anything from apple crisps, to apple muffins or even an apple pie smoothie! Below are a few healthy apple recipes to try out this season!

If you try these or any other healthy fall recipes, share photos with us on Facebook and in the Healthy Families Challenge Facebook group!
