LHI Tip of the Week – Achieve Your New Years Resolution

Happy New Year 2014We have officially stepped into 2014 and one of the most common asked questions is, “What is your New Year’s resolution?” What will you do that will make 2014 a memorable year? A New Year’s resolution does not have to be an enormous feat that will change the world, but it is important to set personal goals. Goals allow you to continue to strive for what you ultimately want in life, no matter how big or small.

Set a S.M.A.R.T. Goal

Setting a goal that is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound is the key to setting yourself up for success. A S.M.A.R.T. goal helps you to make a plan to accomplish your goal as you set it, rather than setting an unrealistic goal and failing immediately. For example: “I will follow Hal Higdon’s 5K training plan and run the April Fool’s Day 5K on April 1”. This example is specific by stating what you will accomplish and how, measurable by stating the event and date, attainable given four months to prepare, realistic for a beginner and time-bound.

Make It Visible

Write your goal down and post it in a place that you will see it every day. The bathroom mirror, refrigerator door or as the background on your phone or computer are a few ideas. Be seeing your goal in front of you every day, you are less likely to forget about it and more likely to stay motivated.

Share Your Goal

Tell your family and friends about what you plan to accomplish in 2014. This keeps you accountable and chances are you will have an abundance of social support. You will quickly find that your peers are genuinely excited for you and will ask about your progress often.

Envision Your Accomplishment

How do you think you will you feel when you accomplish your goal? Take time to envision the environment, the sights, the sounds and the sweet taste of success! There is nothing greater than the feeling of tackling your biggest goals and by envisioning the event; your motivation will stay high as you strive to make it a reality.

Accomplishing your goals is possible when you put your mind to it and don’t quit until you have succeeded. Set your goal, create your plan to accomplish it and watch your dreams unfold. You can do it, you are worth it!
